The culmination of racial policies of the Romanian state against the Roma was the Holocaust of the Roma, or Porajmos, implemented by the Antonescu regime since 1942. During the Porajmos, around 25.000 Roma were deported to Transnistria by the Romanian authorities. Only 14.000 of them returned home in 1944 and 1945, 11.000 being killed or dying because of the very poor conditions in the deportation camps.
